Stumm oder tönend, das ist auch hier die Frage. Ich
zögere, sie als Musiker zu beantworten und neige
ganz privatim der Ansicht zu, daß alle rein ästhetische
Betrachtung in diesem Falle deplaciert ist. Eine
technische Entwicklung, deren Folgen das alte Sprichwort
„Reden ist Silber, Schweigen ist Gold“ durch die
handgreiflichere und unwiderlegliche Realität vielstelliger
Warner-Brothers-Dvidenden und aktiver Tobis-
Jahresbilanzen entkräften, läßt sich auch von schwersten
musischen Einwänden nicht hemmen. Und mag
Charlie Chaplin, das einzig legitime Genie der Leinwand, mit
seinem Plan, im Talkie einen Taubstummen zu mimen,
die bissigste Kritik an der neuen Kunst- (Kunst? ja Kunst!) Form
geübt haben, selbst seine autoritative Opposition wird
mit der Zeit, wird von der Zeit überrannt werden.

Mickey Mouse, the Walt Disney cartoon star, who is now
squeaking bi-lingually has been given a native name
in several foreign countries. The Germans call him Michael
Maus, in France he is Michel Souris, or more familiarly
as Michel in the same way as Charlie Chaplin is known as
Charlot, while the Spaniards call him Miguel Ratonocito
and Miguel Pericote.

HANDS OF POLICE
LONDON, March 7. – Charlie Chaplin wasn‘t in trouble
with the police yesterday, even if he was in their hands.
The comedian sat on the judge‘s bench in the Central Criminal
Court of Old Bailey, and observed the administration
of justice. A distinguished group of judges, barristers and court
officials entertained Chaplin at luncheon.“
