There is only one Chaplin. There are laughs – and sobs –
that only he can create. But considering the time,
money and comedy genius that have gone into this, the result
is disappointing. It‘s far below „Shoulder Arms“ or
„The Gold Rush.“ A Tramp loves a blind flower girl, who
believes him a millionaire. That‘s the story. The
gags are sure-fire, fast and funny. Charlie is great – but
the film isn‘t.

„I am just an actor trying to do the best I can“
Editorial content. „ONLY AN ACTOR.
Charlie Chaplin, whose latest picture, City Lights, is now
being shown at United Artists, was asked if he realized
he was a great humanitarian. ,No,‘ replied Chaplin, ,all I ,realize‘
is, that I am just an actor trying to do the best I can, and
I‘m perfectly willing to leave humanity to humanity.‘ Chaplin
believes that propaganda and preaching have no place
on the screen, and that his work is to try to entertain the people
who pay their good money to see him. City Lights has
broken all attendance records at United Artists and the theater
has held some notable pictures that have attracted
capacity audiences. The picture is Chaplin at his best.“
