& Royalty-Honored Film Stars Get

      Icy Snubs from L. A.‘s Iowa 400 –

                                                  Hollywood, March 3.

The society dowager here who stated that all persons

connected with the coming reception to the King

and Queen of Spain were „all socially prominent excepting,

of course, the motion picture people,“ sums

in a nutshell the attitude of the burg‘s codfish aristocracy

toward the picture crowd.

Pictures have been an institution here for around 20 years

and during that time some rather important men

and ladies, socially, intellectually and otherwise, have been

connected with the business. But so far as being

recognized as social equals with the 400 from the corn-belt,

it just hasn‘t been. (...)

Pickford and Fairbanks can be received

by royalty in Europe, Chaplin can be given the Legion

of Honor ribbon in France and be mentioned

for a knighthood in England, but in the so-called society

circles of Los Angeles they are „picture folk.“

& Chaplin‘s Third Command

London – King George and Queen Mary saw Charlie

Chaplin‘s „Dog‘s Life“ and „Gold Rush“ at Sandringham recently,

their third command showing of Chaplin pictures.

The two previous ones were „City Lights“ and „The Gold Rush.“

(„The Gold Rush“ is mentioned twice.) The Prince

of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of York and the Duke

of Gloucester were among those in the audience

at the recent showing.

& Chaplin Did Not Spurn

      Command Performance

Contrary to an opinion now existing, Charlie Chaplin

did not decline to give a performance at the command of the

King of England but instead refused to take part in a

benefit show for variety artists, said Carlyle Robinson, Chaplin‘s

representative, to The Film Daily yesterday.“ (...)

The King did not command Chaplin to appear before him,

Robinson stated.
