CITY LIGTS
Rollie Totheroh, Cameraman
By GEORGE BLAISDELL
HAVING in mind the fact that Charles Chaplin spent more
than two years in the making of „City Lights“ and in view
of a remark he made to the first night audience at the new Los
Angeles Theatre opening it would seem that off the screen
as well as on it he still is the premier comedian.“ (...)
„City Lights“ will not qualify as the comedian‘s best or greatest,
but it will serve.

„Exploitation being switched to Chaplin“
Editorial content. „Nothing Big in Los Angeles;
Rango Starts Lightly, $8,500;
Cimarron and Lights, $20,000 Ea.
Los Angeles, Feb. 24.
No punch in current business for the local picture theatres.
It may be Lent Week‘s new crop of attractions is not
exciting the fans and when Big Trail was pulled from the
Criterion after 10 days it created a new opening day
for the house and New Moon, which came in Sunday (22).
Operetta started mildly with local radio stations
hopping onto the score. No one knows yet how much that
hurt or whether it had any effect.
Last week Inspiration pulled $33,300 to the State,
and when they flock at that rate to one house the others suffer
unless the peasants happen to be particularly film
minded that week.
Neither of the Publix houses is even cantering this week,
Finn and Hattie is dormant at the Paramount, skimming
close to the record low, while Rango is not attracting at the
United Artists where $8,500 typifies the pace. Illicit,
too, is only luke warm in day and dating at the two Warner
spots.
Cimmaron is the real leader among the downtown films
with over $20,000 on its third week, and that‘s plenty.
Western‘s second week beat Amos and Andy. Chaplin won‘t
better $20,000 again this week.“ (...)

„Los Angeles (Gumbiner) – City Lights (Chaplin)
(2,000: 25-$1.50) (4th wk.) Stays another week, prolongation
of seven days, exploitation being switched to Chaplin
instead of new theatre‘s various, interior features; a bit short
of $20,000 indicated; last week $18,000 with some
improvement anticipated.“ (...)
