Says He Has Nothing Against Talkies

                                              LONDON, February 19.

Thousands of people thronged the approaches to Paddington

station this afternoon, and gave Charlie Chaplin

a great welcome to London.

In the forefront of the crowd were several of the film star‘s  companions of his boyhood. He greeted them warmly

and assured them that he would make an early visit to his

birthplace at Lambeth.

      Thousands, including fashionable women,

mobbed the approaches to Paddington or streamed

along the arrival platform.

Policemen shepherded him to his motor car, and next

moment Charlie reappeared seated on the roof,

waving his hat and stick and blowing kisses to the scores

of hands held up for a handshake.

There were similar scenes in the neighborhood of Carlton,

where Chaplin is occupying a royal suite.

„Very nervous“

Editorial content. „Chaplin Chats With G. B. Shaw

,Very Nervous‘ at Meeting Great Writer.

      By Associated Press.

London, Feb. 25. – Charlie Chaplin met George

Bernard Shaw today, but the film comedian was ,very nervous‘

at the prospect of being introduced to the great writer.

After the meeting, which took place at the townhouse

of Nancy Lady Astor, Chaplin confessed he had felt

uneasy. At the luncheon they discussed world economics.

,I was frightened on my way to the luncheon,‘

he said. ,But as soon as I got there the warmth of Shaw‘s

personality put me perfectly at ease. I‘ve always

been interested in Shaw and read most of his plays, but

he is quite different from what I had supposed.

,We talked about pictures and then the conversation

drifted to world economics.‘

After the luncheon, Chaplin, Shaw, Lady Astor and

Amy Johnson, the British aviatrix, posed with linked

arms for photographers. Then Charlie hurried off for a dinner

engagement at the country home of Winston Churchill.“

The London Premiere of City Lights takes place

at the Dominion February 27, 1931.

Dominion Theatre, Tottenham Court Road, London.
