Should Charles Chaplin go through with his plans

Editorial content. „Reich Newspapers Forbidden To Refer

      To American Films

Berlin, April 10. – German newspapers have been forbidden

by the Ministry of Propaganda henceforth to mention

American films. Recently also, the Hamburg Tageblatt in a full-page article suggested a Nazi boycott of American films

in retaliation for the making of Confessions of a Nazi Spy,

by Warner Bros.

In the same article it was suggested that Germany

forbid the importation of American films, should Charles Chaplin

go through with his plans for making The Dictators for

United Artists.

Distribution quarters here expressed little concern, because

Germany is virtually a lost market. Only 32 features were

released by American companies in Germany last year, and only

three companies are still operating there limitedly.

British officials also have taken cognizance of The

Dictators, with reports from London that its production has

been frowned upon.

Confessions of a Nazi Spy is scheduled to open at the

Strand on April 28.“
