      By Associated Press

New York, Oct. 16. Charlie Chaplin ‘s Antics in The Great

Dictator – his first movie in more than four years – drew

to Times Square last night New York‘s most glittering screen

premiere audience since Gone With the Wind.

In the audience were Alfred E. Smith, James Farley,

Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr., John J. Raskob, Fannie Hurst, Charles Laughton and his wife, Elsa Lanchester, Douglas Fairbanks Jr.,

Irvin Berlin and scores of other celebrities.

Chaplin‘s ribbing of totalitarian dictators in ,mythical‘

kingdoms brought applause and roars of laughter from the house

as he played the double roles of Hynkel, dictator of Tomania,

and a little Jewish barber.

Reception for the most part was enthusiastic. The New York

Times commented: ,It turns out to be a truly superb

accomplishment by a truly great artist – and, from one point

of view, perhaps the most significant film ever produced.‘“

The Great Dictator world premiere is in New York Oct. 15, 1940

at the Capitol and Astor Theatres.

Capitol Theatre, 1645 Broadway (at 51st Street), New York.
