By THOMAS M. PRYOR
OVERSHADOWING all else on the immediate cinema
horizon is, of course, the worn première of Charles
Spencer Chaplin‘s The Great Dictator, which will take place
on Tuesday night simultaneously at the Astor and
Capitol Theatres. Come rain or brilliant moonlight, batteries
of Klieg lights will play over over the center and
northern extremity of Times Square to herald the culmination
of two years of work carried out in strictest secrecy
behind barred studio doors. In addition to other first-night
accoutrements there is a strong possibility that King
Charlot himself will be on hand. But even if he doesn‘t show
up, autograph hounds and the curious can count
on the presence of Jack Oakie, who plays Napolini (get it?)
to Charlie‘s Hynkel, and Paulette Goddard, the little
street gamin. Mr. Oakie came on from Western pastures last
week and Miss Goddard is scheduled to arrive
from a Cuban holiday by plane on Tuesday morning.“
The Great Dictator world premiere is in New York Oct. 15, 1940
at the Capitol and Astor Theatres.
Capitol Theatre, 1645 Broadway (at 51st Street), New York.
Astor Theatre, 1531 Broadway (at 45th Street), New York.
