„Chaplin received a notable ovation“

Editorial content. „CHAPLIN HITS PEAK IN COMEDY

      ,Circus‘ Triumphant Laugh Festival

Carnival Spirit Rules at Chinese Theater

      Poodles Hanneford Diverts in Prologue

      By EDWIN SCHALLERT

(Reprinted from Saturday‘s late edition of Times)

Charlie Chaplin won proof last evening of the devotion

of Hollywood, and compansated the premiere audience

for his picture, The Circus, with one of his most triumphant

achievements.

A festive opening was celebrated by Sid Grauman

at the Chinese Theater in token of the stellar comedian‘s first

production since The Gold Rush.

The Circus is a show for everybody. And so, too,

it may be mentioned, is the prologue, in which ,Poodles‘

Hanneford does some uproarious entertaining.

You will laugh and laugh at The Circus. It is glorious fun.

It is unalloyed comedy for the most part, and the pathos

that sends its subtle shadow athwart the silver canvas of the

screen here and there will capture with its delicacy.“ (...)

„Charlie‘s pathos in this picture is engaging. The film blots

out on a lonely figure in the deserted sawdust ring,

the circus having moved on with the girl and Charlie‘s rival

happily united. It is an ending, I believe, that will be

found very appealing.

The Circus introduces Merna Kennedy on the screen,

and she is pleasing.“ (...)

„Sid Grauman has devised a perfect show for the

kiddies in his prologue. The work of ,Poodle‘ Hanneford is a rare

treat. The feats that he performs in comedy

horsemanship are nothing short of marvelous.“ (...)

„Just before the showing of the picture Fred Niblo

introduced Charlie and members of the cast. Chaplin received

a notable ovation.“

      Grauman‘s Chinese Theater, 6925 Hollywood Blvd., L. A.

The Circus is released by United

Artists in New York January 6, 1928.
