Although he is a confirmed teetotaler, having „fallen from
grace“ only once, Charles Chaplin, who so vividly
plays the inebriated swell in A Night in an English Music Hall
at the Empress this week, is, strangely enough,
in full sympathy with those who imbibe not wisely but too well.

A practical demonstration of cause and effect was
given at the Empress theatre yesterday.
The Cause was the return of Karno‘s company of English
players in A Night in an English Music Hall.
The Effect was packed houses, causing F. W. H. Green,
the expert dispenser of tickets, to put forth his
best efforts, making Superintendent Logan perspire freely
in a successful effort to instill a semblance
of orderliness in the crowd and filling the heart of Manager
