Chaplin at Karno´s, USA/Canada Clippings 270/286

Los Angeles Herald, Los Angeles, October 22, 1913,

Another interesting point is how Charles Kessel saw the skit

„A Night In a London Club“ in which „a small man with

big pants and a curious gait“ attracted his attention. Kessel

could not forget the funny pants and the result was

Charles Chaplin‘s engagement in motion pictures at a salary

of $150 a week.

„Mr. Chaplin is immense“

Editorial content. „HILARITY RULES AT THE EMPRESS“ (...)

„Fred Karno, in his London Comedians, presents

Mr. Fred Chaplin and his corps of willing assistants. Mr. Chaplin

is known from coast to coast as the original

,souse.‘ The word is not pretty, but neither is Mr. Chaplin.

As the original dyed in the wool, dead in the

face drunkard, Mr. Chaplin is immense. At this point

the house slipped and stripped its gears, and

went stark staring crazy with joy. Mr. Chaplin slammed and

was slammed about the stage in a manner most

miraculous. He inflicted falls upon others but took a number

himself. Everyone on the stage did weird topplings.

The piano player stood on his ear and spun about – the

woman – oh well, what‘s the use. See it yourself,

but don‘t tear up the benches.“
