& Harry Myers

Harry Myers, 56, veteran film actor, died in Hollywood,

Dec. 25 after an illness of three days. Coming from

the stage he scored hits in the early silent days of motion pictures, being starred in the original „Connecticut Yankee“ which

later was used as a starring vehicle for Will Rogers. He had an important part in Charlie Chaplin‘s „City Lights“ seven

years ago.

& Mr. Chaplin‘s „Still Life“

Charlie Chaplin has succeeded in wrapping himself

in another mystery. In a catalogue of modern

pictures and drawings to be sold at Christie‘s next Friday

there appears the item „Charlie Chaplin, still life

– pencil.“ Inquiries at the auction rooms to-day drew the answer

that the drawing was by an artist of the name Charlie

Chaplin, but having no connection with anyone else of the

same name.

Further inquiries, in spite of this assurance, made it clear

that the drawing was the work of none other than

Chaplin the film actor. Where was the drawing? What was

it like? No one questioned at Christie‘s had seen

it. It was locked away out of sight by order of the owners.

Who were the owners? The executors of the late

Sir William Orpen.

Th mystery still remains. Lady Orpen has no knowledge

of any drawing by Chaplin having been in her

husband‘s possession, except a few rough pencil

sketches. During Chaplin‘s last two visits to

London Chaplin and Orpen became friends, and in the evenings

in Orpen‘s studio in Chelsea they would sit for hours

talking and sketching one another. Chaplin has a gift – shared

by Caruso and Autori – of quick likenesses, but none

of his friends in London seems able to imagine him as the

author of a „still life.“

& CHAPLIN SKETCH

      SOLD BY CHRISTIE

London, Aug. 24 (UP) – Britain‘s art moguls raised

incredulous eyebrows when Charlie Chaplin made

his debut as an „Old Master“ at Christie‘s auction rooms

in London.

The movie comedian burst into the ranks of „immortals“

with a set of drawings of himself sketched on a piece

of paper several years ago for his friend, the late Sir William

Orpen.

The bidding was spirited. Finally the sketches fell

to Sir Alec Martin for $18.

Chaplin‘s first appearance in the role of a pencil

artist was heralded by the announcement in Christie‘s catalog,

„Still Life – pencil, Charles Chaplin.“

The first sketch of himself is all hat and eyes, another

all boots, and another nothing but legs. To leave

no doubt as to the identity of the artist the paper is signed,

„Dine by Charlie Chaplin.“

„Would turn the head of one less simple“

Editorial content. „Mr. Charles Chaplin

MR. CHAPLIN has used his time in London to good

purpose. He has visited the House of Commons.

He has met many famous people. He has found time to choose

gifts for the children of his old school. His appearance

at the first showing of City Lights was received with spontaneous

enthusiasm. His private dinner afterwards rounded

off a week, hat would turn the head of one less simple and

unaffected.“

The London Premiere of City Lights takes place

at the Dominion February 27, 1931.

Dominion Theatre, Tottenham Court Road, London.
