Charlie Chaplin

MR. CHAPLIN again, if you please. Now „officially“ certified

as a Mutual acquisition, according to a special delivery

letter of thrilling narration of the remarkable events staged under

the camera‘s eye when he manipulated Mr. Freuler‘s

„pet fountain pen that all the stars sign with,“ in the words of the

narrative Mr. Terry Ramsaye, who further confides

that Chaplin will be 27 years April 16, will begin March 20 in Los

Angeles making one two part comedy a month, for

which he will receive $10,000 a week and a $100,000 bonus.

Essanay still has for release „Carmen“ and „Police.“

Mr. G. K. Spoor, who said last night he was „disinterested,“ said

also that „Carmen“ was in 16,000 feet of film, which

has to be winnowed down to either two or four reels for release.

He remarked, too, that Chaplin spent ten and a half

weeks making „Shanghaied.“

& Mr. C. Chaplin in a Brand New Comedy.

      BY KITTY KELLY.

WHAT would filmland be without its comedy squabbles?

Not much, thinks Mr. Charles Chaplin, so he adds

a new one that promises to contribute much to the gayety

of celluloidia.

Yesterday George K. Spoor of Essanay received word

from New York that Mr. Chaplin, annoyed over the

announcement that his „Carmen“ was to be released within

a few days by V. L. S. E. in four reels – two too many

for Mr. Chaplin – declared he would prevent the public from

seeing it by getting out an injunction restraining

Mr. Spoor.

      –

It seems that some time ago Mr. Chaplin made his first

attempt at cutting a picture. He scissored the sixteen

reels of „Carmen“ down to two. Essanay directors were not

pleased with the result. They did it over and made

it a four reeler. Yesterday came Mr. Chaplin‘s thread and here‘s

what Mr. Spoor said last night about it all:

„No matter what Mr. Chaplin says, his contract with

Essanay is in no way violated. Mr. Chaplin‘s O. K.

was not necessary. We have paid Chaplin for 16,000 feet

of negative made taking „Carmen,“ and our contract

gives us the right to use any or all or part of anything he made

for us under that contract.

„.Carmen‘ in two reels as cut by Chaplin was not

acceptable to us, for the reason that Chaplin

left out more good stuff than he put in. We added that good

material and made new scenes of the pirate and

Turpin faction in the picture that makes „Carmen“ as it is now

an understandable burlesque instead of Chaplin and

Purviance in two reels on nothing.

„All Chaplin comedies released by us previously were

cut and supervised by one of our directors, and

„Carmen“ was Chaplin‘s first attempt at cutting, and was

a bad job, until we reconstructed it in four reels.

As it stands now, critics advise us it is a fine picture.

„I will say to exhibitors if Chaplin sees fit

to restrain, he is at liberty to do so, but I wish to remind

them that they take no chance in hooking „Carmen“

as the bond necessary for Chaplin to furnish will be ample

to protect them.“

      –

Meanwhile Mr. Chaplin is reported busy at the Lone Star

Film company‘s studio in Los Angeles on his first

Mutual film. „Police,“ his last – and what he says is hist best

– Essanay will follow „Carmen“ some time.

Inquiry at the V. L. S. E. offices last night elicited

the stupendous piece of news that the world

must struggle along until April 17 without seeing Mr. Chaplin

in „Carmen.“ The announcement printed on Tuesday

that it would be released next Sunday was on the authority

of the Essanay company.
