& Chaplin in a CLEAN Comedy.
Again Charlie is shedding the rays of his radiance
upon us, this time in „The Bank.“ He is „something
in a bank,“ not, you understand, a president or director, or such,
but he wears a coat with brass buttons and manipulates
a mop – both ends of it – in the usual dexterous Chaplinesque
fashion.
This picture is so absolutely clean that an investigative
finger couldn‘t scrape up even a suggestion of dust,
and it is pretty full of comedy. Not that it rocks the house with
laughter, but that it contains some scenes irresistibly
clever, with a subtleness of slapstickery rather unusual in the
chief performer. Mr. Chaplin demonstrates that he is
a comedian as well as a slapsticker.
It is something in the vein of „The Tramp,“ meaning that
it contains a justifiable bit of sentiment, nicely done,
too, but there is a question as to wether the public is going
to care for Charlie in love, in reel life, that is.
Some of these spots seem overlong. From the point
of view of a large segment of people, however,
this is a dandy Chaplin release, enabling folks with sensibilities
to enjoy the arch comedian – from the point of view
some others it may be regarded as a fizzle. O, well, one can‘t
please all of the people all of the time.
