„BIG BERTHA“ MOVES TO FILM „WAR FRONT“
Looking much like the real thing, this prop „Big Bertha“
is being moved to an outdoor location at Hollywood
for war scenes in a Charlie Chaplin picture now in production.
Built in a studio workshop, the gun is 100 feet long
over all, weighs 6,500 pounds, and is mechanically operated
by manpower to „shoot“ projectiles 24 inches by 6 feet,
three inches.

„The copy was built of wood“
Editorial content. „HOLLYWOOD ROUND-UP
HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 13 – (UP) – Even Hollywood, which
is accustomed to seeing almost anything on its famous
streets, was surprised today when a 100-foot gun lumbered
slowly through the city and out into the hills beyond.
The huge artillery piece was constructed by Charlie
Chaplin‘s studio to the dimensions of Germany‘s
famous Big Bertha, which shelled Paris during the World War
from a distance of 75 miles. The copy was built of wood
and weighs more than three tons.
It was hauled to Girard, Cal., 15 miles northwest of Hollywood,
where it will be used as prop in The Dictator.“
