      Visitor, Decides To „Talk“

HOLLYWOOD – (U.P.) – United Artists studios Tuesday

said they had received reports from Carmel that

Charlie Chaplin will talk in his next film, to be produced

shortly.

Chaplin has been at Carmel, the famous artists‘ colony,

for several months, working on a story for his next

production. He is expected to return here sometime next

week.

Meanwhile new sound channels have been installed

at the Chaplin studios.

Chaplin‘s last film was „Modern Times,“ which had

musical accompaniment but no talking.

„With Chaplin on several trips to Carmel“

Editorial content. „CHAPLIN‘S 1ST TALKER FOR UA

      IN 1938-39

                                                Hollywood, April 26.

Charles Chaplin will make his first talker for the United Artists‘

1938-39 program and break his long screen silence.

Although reported resting at Carmel, Calif., for the past few

months he is known to be reading stories from which

his next picture will be adapted.

Comedian recently took an interest in an original

yarn and now has the author at his side at Carmel. Expected

Chaplin will return here next week and start preparation

on the first talker.

New sound equipment war recently installed by RCA

at the Chaplin studio. Since he made Modern Times,

Chaplin confided to intimates that his next would be a talker

for economic reasons. He feels interest in his first

articulater would insure tremendous returns.

Contributing to his decision is the new UA policy of

cutting up extra coin with active producers, and that

one picture annually would give him an income on par with

producers who turn out many more.

Konrad Bercovici has been with Chaplin on several

trips to Carmel and likely the writer‘s original, based on the

life of a musician, will be the comedian‘s choice for his

dramatic talker.“
