MILDRED HARRIS CHAPLIN lays bare her efforts

to reconcile film comedian. She suspects another woman

of weening his love.“

      „By Universal Service.

      LOS ANGELES, March 18. – ,I don‘t want to hold a man

that doesn‘t want to be held.‘

Mildred Harris Chaplin, whose matrimonial break with

Charlie Chaplin was revealed last night, used these

words as she told in detail the ups and downs of married life

with the famous film comedian.

Mrs. Chaplin made it plain that as far as she was

concerned, nuptial bliss is a myth.

      Proceeds to Legal Battle

She laid bare her efforts to bring about a reconciliation

after Charlie‘s departure from their home at 670 South

Oxford street. And realizing this was impossible she told how

she had sought the aid of her attorney and of the

subsequent plans for legal action. Now that the secret is out,

Mrs. Chaplin asserts she will proceed with her plans

of battle. The opening of the legal tilt will depend largely on the

speed in which a picture on which Mrs. Chaplin is now

working, is completed for the screen.

While Mrs. Chaplin was telling her story, reporters were

busy hunting Charlie Chaplin, but inquiries at his

usual haunts brought forth the fact that Chaplin was ,not in.‘

      Charlie Keeps Silent

At his studio it was declared he was out ,on location.‘ Arthur

Wright, Chaplin‘s attorney, refused to comment on the

case, other than to assert that he had been instructed by his

client to remain silent.

,I did all in my power to make Charlie happy,‘ said Mrs.

Chaplin. ,But it didn‘t matter. He wanted to go and

went. The next thing I knew he appeared at the house

unexpectedly with demands that I divorce him

or he would divorce me. I still could not understand and said

so. Then he told me he would give me $25,000 to go

to Nevada and obtain a decree.

,Of course, like any other woman, whose life has been

blameless and who is facing the loss of her husband,

I suspected there was another woman. Only time will prove

if this is true.‘“
