      – Friendship Begun in Europe Ripens Here;

      Enormous Home is Leased

      ,I can‘t say yes; any such announcement must

of necessity come from her.

      ,Neither can I say no; think of the position that would

place her in.‘

      In these words Charlie Chaplin yesterday avoided

official confirmation of the report that he and Pola

Negri will soon marry; avoided official confirmation, and yet

tacitly admitted that the greatest of screen comedians

will soon marry the great tragedienne from Poland.“ (...)

      The light of laughter went out of Chaplin‘s eyes.

His smile disappeared.

      ,I can‘t discuss my personal affairs,‘ said Charlie,

swallowing hard and trying to overcome the blush

that told more than his words.

      ,You newspaper men are just eager to write about

marriages so you can later print a sensational divorce,‘

Ordynski declared.

      ,If Mr. Chaplin is going to marry Pola Negri, that‘s

news,‘ countered the scribe.
