      PRINCIPALS SILENT

Charlie, Lita‘s Lawyers to Confer Again

      in Effort To Settle Case

Merna Kennedy, leading lady for Charlie Chaplin in The

Circus, is ready to protect herself against the

,insinuations‘ that have been made about her in the Charlie

Chaplin-Lita Grey separation case.

Her attorney, Clarence Coonan of San Francisco, is in Los

Angeles and through him the little leading lady

is ready to battle against any undue references to her that

might be made in discussion and settlement of the

Chaplin case.

      COONAN ON JOB

Coonan is already on the job, although he hid himself

from newspaper men today. It is understood that

he will be here until the case is settled, ready to protect

his client.

Mrs. Mabel Kennedy, mother of Merna, said today

that Coonan is here, having returned with them from San

Francisco last night.

,Now we are going to leave the talking to Mr. Coonan,‘

she said. ,Merna‘s name has been drawn into this affair and

we want her protected.‘

Mrs. Kennedy announced before she and her daughter

went to San Francisco to see Coonan her daughter

had been drawn unwillingly and innocently into the case

by ,insinuations‘ and they were going to ,see

their attorney to see what they could do about them.‘

      MUST CONSIDER COONAN

When George Beebe, attorney for Lita Grey, and Lloyd

Wright, attorney for the comedian, do get together

in a conference to work out a settlement they will have

to consider Coonan, according to indications.

Wright said this morning he and Beebe might confer

late today on the matter. One conference already

has been held in which an effort was made to settle the

estrangement out of court.

Neither Chaplin nor his wife would comment on the

matter today.

Mrs. Chaplin‘s version of the alleged party that caused

the break between the couple has been confirmed

by Helen de Laine, a friend of Lita Grey‘s, who said she

attended the affair. She verified Mrs. Chaplin‘s

story that it was only a quiet after-dinner party. It was given

in honor of Baron and Baroness de Precourt, friends

Mrs. Chaplin met on returning from Honolulu.

      MISS DE LAINE‘S STORY

Miss De Laine said she was surprised when Mrs.

Chaplin, after a short absence from the room,

announced that the ,party was off.‘ The guests left quietly,

she said, adding that it was evident that Mrs.

Chaplin had been ordered by somebody to call off

the affair.“
