& Recapitulation
Of the flock of moving pictures that have come
to town during the first month of the new year, only two
remain as candidates for the annual roll of honor
of pictures that have left their mark, if not for all time, at least
for an age. (...)
And the two pictures which emerge from this
scramble are „The Circus“ and „Quality Street,“ both, curiously
enough, playing this past week in the city. (...)
„The Circus“ is by all odds the most important contribution
of the month, and will probably occupy a place near the
very top in the annual summing up. For „The Circus“ is Charlie
Chaplin, and anything that Charlie does will always find
its way with the best of them – since Chaplin at his worst is
Hollywood at its best. Not that „The Circus“ is below the
Chaplin level. It is an efficient production and a laugh-provoker
of the first order – a combination of several old and
new tricks, with the old ones holding their own against the
new ones. And when one remembers that the making
of this comedy was interrupted on several occasions by such
irrelevant matter as troubles with relatives, a divorce
suit with its disgusting publicity, income tax adjustments,
and a defense in a suit of plagiarism, one can only
wonder at and applaud this product. Chaplin still remains
the greatest clown this side of paradise.
