& CHARLIE CHAPLIN AS RECRUIT.
There have been funnier Chaplin films than the new one,
„Shoulder Arms,“ which is widely shown in Manchester
this week; but it will do. This time the great comedian is a soldier
in the United States army – an excellently intentioned
soldier, too, but a little unfortunate. There are his feet, for
instance – the wittiest, the most twinkling feet
in the world maybe, but not exactly military assets.“
(...) M. C., Guardian, Dec. 10, 1918
& It was during the World War that Arthur Kelly, United
Artists‘ foreign manager, then a sales representative
for Charles Chaplin, obtained the unheard of guarantee of
$650,000 for British distribution rights to Chaplin‘s
„Shoulder Arms.“ European theatre attendance, proportionately,
outstripped American attendance during 1915 to 1918,
with highly paid munition workers augmented by a constant
stream of men on leave from military service
constantly seeking entertainment.
